Thankful jars - Canvas Corp Brands

A few weeks ago my daughters started their summer vacation so little presents for the day care teachers were in order. This time we did pancake jars together. The dry ingredients for apple cinnamon pancakes are inside the jar and the card holds the recipe for them. If you'd like to try out the recipe, I've included it below. As you can see we also made some roses to decorate the jars using Hama beads and a embroidery pattern.

These jars also thankful for another reason. They are my last project for Canvas Corp Brands. I'm really thankful for the time I got to design for the company and showcase the three different brands that make the Canvas Corp - Canvas Corp, Tattered Angels and 7Gypsies. So thank you for the bottom of my heart for all the support, trust and assignments! I'm sure to follow the Creative Studio blog still to keep up what the great team has in store for inspiration!

Apple cinnamon pancakes

in the jar:

4 dl flours

1 dl sugar

1 tl salt 

8 tl cinnamon 

2 tl  baking powder 

2 dl dried apples (in cubes) 

needed for the dough: 

4 dl sour cream (Nordic kind)

2 eggs  

4 rkl oil or melted butter  

Mix first all the dry ingredients together and then add the sour cream, eggs and oil. Mix until smooth. Heat a pancake pan and add a touch of oil or butter so the dough won't stick. Scoop a spoonful of the dough to the pan and bake until golden brown. Serve with vanilla ice cream or fresh apple jam. 

Kids can do it - Canvas Corp Brands

Hello there! Can you believe it's already Wednesday! Today I have something a bit different stored here as the projects aren't made by me alone. Canvas Corp shares time to time projects that the whole team can contribute. This time the topic was something that's easy enough that a kid can do it but still aesthetic and good looking. To me, that's one of the most challenging themes. 

I mean I love to pieces the crafts that my kids do. But the point is that they are my kids so to me the projects might look different than to someone else. I look at them through the rosy glasses of a mom. Kids are creative by nature so the actual project isn't a challenge but the point that anyone should regard that as beautiful and pleasing to the eye might be a tricky one. So after a lot of pondering I somehow came up with a really simple thing - painting votive candle holders. Partly the idea is of the painting, partly that the little glass containers can be used in many ways. In autumn you can put a tea light in there and during spring you can plant a bulb or for example lettuce and during summer time place some home made cookies or candy in. 

What you need to make these, is a little glass jar or equivalent, some masking tape and Tattered Angels paints. The "Pigment" ones work really well as the paint is thick enough to create pattern but the other ones give a lovely see-through finish. How ever this paint is too thin to be used in patterns as it flows under the masking tape. 

The steps are really easy - apply the masking tape and then let the painting begin! The easiest way is use just one paint so the two colors don't mix into unwanted colors. Of course you can work in layers like in the dotted one - first paint the jar with a more see-through paint and after that's dried, apply another layer with more opaque paint on top. If you are using masking tape to create patterns, the tapes should be removed when the paint is still wet but surface dry. That way you can also refine the edges if needed.

Summer -14 minialbum - Canvas Corp Brands

Weather here in Finland hasn't been recently so summery, but it's coming anyhow! So when Canvas Corp Creative Crew was asked to do a canvas minibook project I immediately thought about doing a base for my kids to document the summer. 

I used a Canvas Corp canvas book as the base for this project. For the inner pages I sewed ivory cardstock for the background and then embellished the pages a little using happy, bright colors that remind me of summer. I chose to go with pink and yellow and added some black in there, too. The cardstock pieces are better to write on than just the canvas base. I also think that it's easier for my kid's to glue something on to the paper than straight to the canvas.

My idea was to let the girls add their own documentation here with me helping them. A picture there, some journaling here and also some memorabilia. For that I included small envelopes to the pages so that any tickets or other ephemera is easy to include to the album. Here's just a few sneak of the album, but I guess you get the idea I had. 

For the cover I used the same color scheme than in the inner pages, but instead of sewing a piece of paper there I used gesso and a stencil to create a big bloom. As gesso works like a resist I then colored the cover with Tattered Angels mists and after the mists had dried I doodled with a black pen to the cover. Lastly I sewed on a piece of Canvas Corp paper, a washi tape strip and also the letters and numbers. My idea was to really stick them to the cover as I guess the album will be going from a bag to bag during the course of the summer.

These fluffy bunnies make a decoration for winter but you can use them in cards, too. The craft need some preparation for small ones, but bigger kids can do them by themselves.

Nämä pehmoiset pupuset käyvät talvisiksi koristeiksi, mutta niitä voi käyttää myös korttehin. Pikkuaskartelijoita varten puput tarvitsevat hieman esivalmistelua, mutta isommat lapset osaavat tehdä näitä itse.

Materials: / Tarvikkeet:
- cardstock / kartonkia 
- pen / kynä 
-scissors / sakset 
- glue / liimaa
- cotton wool / pumpulia
- Hama beads / hamahelmiä 
- thread / lankaa

1) Draw a bunny to a piece of cardstock. Cut the image off the paper and use it as a pattern to make whole flock of bunnies. 2) Cut the bunnies off the paper. 3) Spread some glue on top of the bunny figure and glue some cotton wool for the bunny's fur. Let the glue to dry. 4) Add a face or a tail to the bunny. Use Hama beads and thread for the face or a ball of cotton wool for the tail. Glue in place and let dry.

1) Piirrä pupun kaava suttupaperille tai kartongille. Leikkaa kaava irti ja piirrä sen avulla kokonainen lauma pupuja. 2) Leikkaa puput irti. 3) Levitä pupupohjalle liimaa ja liimaa päälle pumpulia. Anna liiman kuivua. 4) Tee pupulle naama hamahelmillä ja viikset langasta tai häntä pumpulipallosta. Liimaa paikoilleen ja anna kuivua.

Even if there's no snow at the ground, you can have snow flakes on the window. Depending on the design, these can be done by small children also.

Vaikkei maassa olisikaan hankea ja järvet jäässä, niin ikkunassa voi silti liidellä hiutaleet. Riippuen tyylistä, hyvin pienetkin lapset saavat tehtyä omia hiutaleita.

Materials: / Tarvikkeet:

- craft sheet or similar non stick surface / askartelualusta tai muu vastaava tarttumaton pinta

- Erikeeper or similar / Erikeeper tai vastaava

- grill stick / grillitikku

1) Squeeze a circle or glue to the craft sheet. You can also use a transparency, but it's little harder to peel the design off that than the non stick sheet. 2) Start to spread the glue to form a snow flake. The older the children, the more detailed the desing. 3) When the design is ready, leave it to dry. 4) When the snow flake has turned most parts transparent, peel it off the sheet. There can be a little white showing in the middle, but not so much that it smears. 5) You can use these snow flakes to decorate windows - just stick the flake to the glass and it stays there.

1) Purista liimaa askartelualustalle. Voit myös käyttää piirtoheitinkalvoa, mutta siitä hiutaleen irroitus on hieman hankalampaa. 2) Ala levittää liimaa lumihiutaleen muotoon. Mitä vanhempi lapsi, sen pikkutarkempi malli voi olla. 3) Kun hiutale on valmis, anna liiman kuivua. 4) Kun lumihiutale on muuttunut läpinäkyväksi suurimmalta osalta, irroita hiutale varovasti alustasta. Valkoista voi olla vielä näkyvissä hiutaleen keskellä, mutta se ei saa olla enää tahraavan märkää. 5) Hiutaleita voi käyttää ikkunakoristeina - aseta vaan hiutale lasiin ja se pysyy siinä.

Angel and elves / Enkeli ja tontut

Some Christmas decorations done with kids - an angel and two elves or gnomes are they. The basis of the creatures is the cardboard cylinder from toilet or tissue paper painted either white or red. The gnomes have red caps and beards, the angel has a halo and wings. 

Jouluisia hahmoja lasten kanssa tehtynä. Kaikkien vartalona on wc- tai talouspaperirullan hylsy, joka on maalattu joko punaiseksi tai valkoiseksi. Tontuilla on punaiset lakit ja pitkät parrat, enkelillä sädekehä ja siivet.

Handprint bookmark / Kädenjälkikirjanmerkki

I found that there's a lot, and I mean a lot, posts in my drafts that are more or less Christmassy. So starting today I'm going to post them here on the blog so that maybe you can use them to inspire you. There's going to be little gift ideas and crafts to do with kids as well as Christmas decorations an such.

This first post is about a little something to be added to a book to be given as a present. A bookmark made of child's palm print.

Nyt tulee oikea postauskeskitys - luonnoksissa on valtavasti lasten kanssa askarreltua pientä lahjaideaa ja muuta jouluista, joten päivittelen ne tulevan viikon aikana blogiin. 

Tässä ensimmäisessä postauksessa on pieni idea pukinkonttiin, joka on nopea tehdä, mutta saattaa olla lahjan saajalle juuri se piste i:n päälle. Kyseessä on lapsen kädenjäljestä tehty kirjanmerkki. Kädenjälkeä paperille painaessa kannattaa peukku ja pikkurilli koettaa pitää erillään muista sormista ja kämmenestä. Kun jäljen sitten leikkaa kuvan osoittamalla tavalla - saa kirjanmerkin.

Today Finland celebrates Saint Lucy's Day. She's the light bearer and every year Swedish speaking Finns (Finland is bilingual) crown a Lucy with a crown of candles. The Lucy often has blond hair and wears a white gown, so this angelic appearance inspired today's craft for kids  - angels made of doilies.

Valoisaa Lucian päivää! Uusi Lucia kruunataan tänään kynttiläkruunulla. Valokehä ja valkoinen puku ovat kovin enkelimäisiä, joten päivän askarteluluukusta paljastuu kakkupaperienkeleitä lapsien kanssa tehtäväksi.

Materials: / Tarvikkeet:
- doilies / kakkupapereita
- watercolors / vesivärit
- brush / pensseli
- scissors / sakset
- large buttons / isoja nappeja
- glue / liimaa
- feathers / höyheniä

1) Paint the doily with watercolors and let dry. 2) Fold the doily in half. 3) Cut the doily in half using the crease line as a guide. 4) Fold the piece in half, right side up. Open the crease. 5) Fold the two sides to meet up in the middle, wrong side up - so fold each side to the crease line just created. Create creses and open. 6) The trickiest part - fold the newly created crease line to the center crease at the back in both sides. The piece looks like a triange from the back (left image), but on front side, there's smaller triagle on top of a big one (right image). 7) Glue a large button for the head. 8) Glue two feathers for the wings.

You can either attach a stick to the angel or open the dress a bit so she stands up.

1) Maalaa kakkupaperi vesiväreillä. Anna maalin kuivua. 2) Taita kakkupaperi puoliksi. 3) Leikkaa taitosta myöden. 4) Taita puolikas puoliksi niin että maalattu puoli jää päälle ja avaa taitos. 5) Taita leikattu reuna äsken tehtyyn taitosviivaan kummaltakin puolelta niin, että maalattu puoli jää taitosten sisään. Avaa taitos. 6) Seuraa hankalin osuus - taita juuri aikaansaatu taitoslinja keskitaitoslinjaan nurjalla puolella. Toista toiselle reunalle. Kappale näyttää nyt takaa kolmiolta (vasen kuva), mutta edessä on pienempi kolmio isomman päällä (oikea kuva). 7) Viimeistele enkeli liimaalalla pää suuresta napista ja 8) siivet kahdesta höyhenestä.

Voit halutessasi liittää enkeliin esim. grillitikun, mutta hieman mekkoa avaamalla enkeli osaa myös seistä koristeena.

It's good to have a special place to Christmas mail. Here's a little mail box for incoming cards that can be done with kids.

Joulupostille on mukava olla oma, spesiaali paikka. Tässä on pieni postilaatikko, jonka voi tehdä lasten kanssa.

Materials: / Tarvikkeet: 
- cardboard box / pahvinen pakkaus 
- paper / paperia 
- old book pages or newspaper / vanhoja kirjansivuja tai sanomalehteä 
- watercolors / vesivärit 
- brush / pensseli
- scissors / sakset 
- douple sided tape / kaksipuolista teippiä 
- stamps / leimoja 
- sticker alphas / tarra-aakkosia 
- lace ribbon or other embellishments / pitsiä tms. koristeita 

1) Paint a few papers and some old book pages with watercolours. As they dry, cut the cardboard box into a post box. Cut a piece of the front side away and cut the sides sloped from back to forth. 2) Wrap a watercolour painting across the box and secure it with double sided tape. 3) Slip a book page inside the box and attach it to the back wall. 4) Decorate the box with stamping, sticker alphas and lace trim.

1) Maalaa muutama paperi ja joitakin kirjansivuja vesiväreillä. Maalausten kuivuessa leikkaa pahvilaatikosta postilaatikko. Leikkaa laatikon etureunasta pala pois ja sivuista vinot tasaten etu- ja takareunan korkeusero. 2) Päällystä laatikko vesivärimaalauksella. 3) Kiinnitä laatikon takaseinään, laatikon sisälle palanen kirjansivua. 4) Koristele leimaamalla, tarrakirjaimilla ja nauhoilla. Kiinnitä naulaan ja odottele joulupostia saapuvaksi.

Sanna used alcohol inks in her great candles. Here's an idea what you can do with kinds using alcohol inks, transparency and some cardstock.

Sanna käytti mahtavissa kynttilöissään alkoholimusteita. Tässä on idea, mitä voi tehdä lasten kanssa alkoholimusteilla, piirtoheitinkalvolla ja kartongilla.

Materials / Tarvikkeet:
- transparency / piirtoheitinkalvo
- alcohol inks / alkoholimusteita
- ink tool / musteenlevitin
- cardstock or cards / kartonkia tai korttipohjia
- scissors / sakset
- douple sided tape / kaksipuolista teippiä
- (white acrylic paint, sentiment stamp, StazOn ink) / (valkoista akryylimaalia, toivotusleimasin, StazOn -muste)

1) Squeeze some inks to the blending tool and let the child color the transparency 2) Cut a hole to the card 3) Attach a piece of coloured transparency inside the card using douple sided tape 4) Finish with a stamped sentiment using StazOn ink or little white dots with acrylic paint.

Are the Christmas cards already done? Here's a simple card you can do with small children.

Tervetuloa ensimmäiseen lapsille suunnattuun askarteluluukkuun! Näitä luukkuja avautuu joka tiistai ja torstai - tervetuloa mukaan!

Ovatko joulukortit jo valmiit? Tässä on helppo talvinen kortti, jonka voi toteuttaa myös hyvin pienten lasten kanssa.

Materials / Tarvikkeet:
- coloured cardstock or cards / värikkäitä kartonkeja tai korttipohjia
- white ink or paint / valkoinen muste tai maali
- black and white pen / valkoinen ja musta kynä
- orange feltpen / oranssi tussi

1) Press the little finger to the ink pad and then stamp fingerprints to the card. Push a few on top of each other to form a snowman or scatter the prints around to make bunnies. Let the ink dry. 2) Finish the card by drawing ears and a tail with white to the bunnies, with black eyes and whiskers for the bunnies and eyes, buttons and a hat for the snowmen and a carrot nose with orange to the snowmen.

1) Paina pieni sormi musteeseen ja leimaa sitten sormella jälkiä kortille. Painele muutama jälki toisensa päälle lumiukkoa varten ja sirottele jälkiä sinne tänne pupuiksi. Anna musteen kuivua. 2) Viimeistele kortit piirtämällä. Piirrä valkoisella pupuille hännät ja korvat, mustalla silmät ja viikset pupuille ja silmät, napit ja hattu lumiukoille. Oranssilla saa mainion porkkananenän ukoille.

Lasten teos / Kid's canvas

Lisää lasten teoksia luonnoksista ulos. Tässä on lahjaksi mennyt yhteistyön tulos. Lapset tekivät taustan, K pääsi jopa kokeilemaan äidin suihkeita. Minä leikkasin kukat maalatuista kirjansivuista ja lopuksi vielä piirrettiin liiduilla. 

More crafts by my daughters. This one was a present. First we made a collage using scraps of paper, then the kids painted over it with diluted acrylic paint. Then K got to use "my" spray inks. The flowers are made of bookpages girls coloured with water colours. Lastly they drew with crayouns on top of everything.

Omakuvat / Self-portraits

Siitä onkin vierähtänyt hetki, kun blogissa on ollut esillä näitä lasten kanssa tehtyjä juttuja. Piirtäminen ja maalaaminen on edelleen in, mutta jokin aika sitten tehtiin tällaiset omakuvat. Vasemmalla on An (1,5 v.) ja oikealla Kn (3 v.) omakuvat. 

Minä leikkasin pohjat ja tytöt työsti siitä eteenpäin paperisuikaleista lähtien. K käytteli itse liimaa, mutta äiti toimi An liimamasterina. Huomasittehan muuten, että An toinen silmä on hyvin vaeltavaa sorttia? 

Työt on muuten kuvattu Kn piirroksen päällä. Sen nimi on "Verisuonia" - Olipa kerran elämä on kova juttu.

There's been a while since I last blogged about something my kids have created. But here's self-portraits by them, we did these some time ago. The one on the left is done by A, 20 monts, and the one on the right by K, 3 years.

I cut the basis for the portraits and then girls got into action. They tore some paper, glued it down (K can apply the glue herself, but I need to apply the glue to A) and then added the facial details with yarn and some buttons. I guess you noticed that my younger one has a shifty eye? Ha ha.

The picture is taken on a piece of art made by K. It's called "Veins". Her favourite program at the moment is "Once upon a time ...life". 

Mixed media kortti / Mixed media card

Esikoisen kummisetä täytti pyöreitä vuosia ja piti mainiot juhlat, jonne ei saanut viedä lahjoja laisinkaan. Myös kukat oli rastittu yli, mutta kortteja ei ollut mainittu - niinpä me tyttöjen kanssa hiukan venytimme käsitettä ja teimme tuollaiselle taulupohjalle komean kokoisen kortin. Teoksen koko on 30x40 cm.

Pohja on maalattu akryylimaaleilla. Sitten pohjalle on kiinnitetty muutama kirjasta leikattu pyörylä, jotka on maalattu vesiväreillä. Vesivärit kun eivät tarttuneet akryylin päälle, mutta kukkiin kovin helpolla. Lopuksi väritettiin vielä vahaliiduilla. Minä piirsin kukille varret ja värittelin lehdet, muun hoitivat tytöt.

Our older daughter's godfather turned 50 and the invitation said "no presents, no flowers". There wasn't any mention of cards, though, so we did this "card" with the kids. It's done to a canvas base, sized 30x40 cm. 

The base has been painted with acrylics. The flowers are cut from an old book and then glued to the background. Girls coloured the flowers then with water colours. I then drew some stems and leaves and then they coloured the piece with oil pastels. I added some colour to the leaves but otherwise this piece is made by them.

Askartelutalkoot / Crafting all day

Tällä hetkellä askarrellaan kaikki mahdolliset hetket ja valmista syntyy, muttei mitään, jota voisi suoraan laittaa blogiin. Välillä tosin pitää pitää taukoa "työstä" ja luoda jotain ihan itseänsä varten, joten kyllä tännekin päivitettävää tulee jossain vaiheessa.

I'm crafting every possible moment right now, but all the things I get done can't be shown here in months. But don't worry, I'm taking a break from the work every now and then and creating something completely for myself.

Perhossade / It's raining butterflies!

Kesällähän ei sada (heh) niin tehtiin tyttöjen kanssa yhteistyössä perhossadetta. Likat teki pilvet ja leikkeli osan "satavista" kuvioista, äti liimasi kuviot paikoilleen. Lähetin tämän jutun Fiskarettesiin.

Because it doesn't rain on summer (yeah, right), we did rain clouds with butterflies with the kids. My daughters made the clouds and cut some of the embellishments and I glued them in place. 

Kiitoskassit / Thank you bags

Dagiksessa oli jo kevätjuhla ja tehtiin tytön kanssa yhteistyössä hoitajille kassit. Minä ompelin valkaisemattomasta lakanasta kassit ja yhdessä painettiin niihin kukat. Kukan keskusta on käden kuva, terälehdet jalat. Piirsin vielä varret ja lehdet kangastussilla.

Thank you gifts for kidergarden teachers. I sewed the bags and then K and I printed the flowers. The center of the flower is a hand print and the petals foot prints. Then I drew some leaves and stems with fabric feltpen. 

Avainhenkilölle / To the key person

Äitienpäivätunnelmissa jatketaan, sillä nämä avaimenperät olivat meidän äitienpäivälahjamme isoäideille. Molemmat tytöt pääsivät osallistumaan. K teki yhdessä äidin kanssa hamahelmiosuudet ja valitsi helmet korupiikkeihin. A puolestaan väritteli innokkaasti kutistemuovia, johon sitten leimasin kuvat ja leikkasin osiot irti. Saa nähdä arvaavatko isoäidit näitä käyttää!

Another post connected to Mother's Day - these are our gifts to grandmothers. Both girls got to participate in making. K made the hama bead parts and choose the wooden pearls. A coloured some shrink plastic and I stamped the images and cut them out. It's fun to see, if garndmother's are going to use these key rings!

Äitienpäivänä / Mother's Day

Heh, hiukan tulee myöhässä, mutta ideana ensi äitienpäivää varten. Minä nimittäin sain toukokuun toisena sunnuntaina näin upean pannunalusen. Tyttö oli sen dagiksessa tehnyt ja oli niin ylpeä siitä itsekkin. Alusta on vielä olohuoneen hyllyllä esillä ja ihasteltavana, mutta pitänee se jossain vaiheessa ottaa käyttöönkin. K oli myös piirtänyt hienon kukkaketokortin lahjan lisäksi. 

A bit late, but hey, there's always next year! I got this fabulous pot coaster as a Mother's Day gift for my older daughter. She had made it herself and also drew that lovely card to go with it. The coaster is still in our living room bookshelf on display, but I think I need soon to move it to the kitchen and start to use it. 

Kukkia joka sormelle / Flowery fingers

Tehtiin tyttöjen kanssa parit kukkakimppukortit. Varsina toimii lapsen kädenjälki, kukat on leikattu kuviopapereista leikkureilla ja liimattu paikalleen. Simppeliä ja nopeaa.
