All the Other Colors - Seth Apter Creative Team

Happy Thursday! Last Sunday Seth Apter started an art exhibition and sale for his Creative Team. I created a triptych for it and will now show the pieces in individual posts. I've already shared the first and second piece and today it's the last one of the bunch.

I've always lived close to the sea. I was born and raised in Turku, a south-west coastal city. I then moved to Helsinki, the capital by the sea. As a child I needed to travel a bit to see the sea, but now I can just look out through our window to see the glimmering waves. Or frozen ice during winter time. When feeling stressed or really needing to ponder upon something, I have two places to sooth me. The other one is a coniferous forest, the other sea shore. Gazing to the horizon always seem to put things in right perspective.

My love for the sea was the other reason to choose this poem. The other was the poet. I stumbled upon Södergran in my teens. Her way of depicting emotion, telling a story, provoking thoughts really spoke to me and she still remains one of my favorite poets. While she was ahead of her time, introducing modern poetry to Finland, I'm not sure how much of her work is translated in English, but in case you want to read more about her, here's the Wikipedia page (link). There's also some info about her in Project Runeberg (link).

As I wrote in the first post, the triptych is inspired by a poem by Edith Södergran, called "Det underliga havet / Ihmeellinen meri" - loosely translated "The strange sea". The trio is depictions of the first three lines of the poems. Where as first and second piece have an image on them, the fish and the flower, this third one is more abstract.

The name of the piece is "All the Other Colors". The line goes: "Jag har sett rött och gult och alla andra färger" - "I have seen red and yellow and all the other colors". You may have noticed the yellow and red circle in the other two pieces as well. I had thought of using them here, but when I was working with the series I thought it would be a great way to bind the pieces even further together.

There were many ways I could have depicted this line. I especially pondered upon the size of the color areas. While I could have just created a rainbow to depict the line, I connected that more to the underwater world. As ocean is vast, I chose to add just little dots of color in the vast area of blue rather than bigger red and yellow segments.

So, now you've seen all the three pieces! Which one of the three is your favorite? I think mine is either this abstract or then the flowery one. Thank you for stopping by today!
