Paint the leaves rusty - Prima Marketing

Although it’s just August, autumn draws nearer. I was inspired by the anticipation of the colorful leaves and those velvety nights of the next season for this project I made for Prima Marketing. I was thinking how autumn colors the leaves and did a canvas styled piece on top of a wooden plank. It’s kind of the brush of autumn, all colored with rusty, warm tones.

For the background I used the “Junkyard Treasures” Texture Fantasy Patina Paste set and added more rust, raw sienna color with Impasto paints. The spiky leaves of “Woodland Ferns” needed some softening so I added “Metal Lotus” to tone them down. I really love how you can mix and match everything in Finnabair selection! Underneath is a quick step by step text if you want to re-create this!

1) Start by making a touch of texture to the background using the "Wood Texture" stencil and Modeling Paste.

2) Adhere the "Resin Flowers Medallion" pieces to the background using 3D Gloss Gel. Let both the gel and the paste dry before continuing.

3) Treat the background using the "Junkyard Treasures" Texture Fantasy pastes. I used mostly the blue and the purple in the set to get the autumn evening feel. Use a pounding motion to apply the paste rather than painting it. That way you really get the texture showing.

4) Make the main composition to the piece using an old paintbrush and Mechanicals. Adhere the pieces in place using 3D Gloss Gel. Start by adding the brush in place and then fill the composition with the "Woodland Ferns" leaves and "Metal Lotus" blooms.

5) Finish the composition using little scattered items like "Mini Knobs" and "Mini Stars". Add also some "Melange Art Pebbles Vintage" here and there and put one inside each flower as well. Use again 3D Gloss Gel to adhere. Let dry before continuing.

6) Dry-brush some Impasto paints on top of the whole thing. To emphasize the rusty effect, I used "Pumpkin" and "Poppy Red" in my project. Treat the brush, the leaves and the edges and raised areas of the background.

7) Lastly add some splashes with the same acrylic colors you used in dry-brushing to finish the piece. Let the project dry and display on your wall or give as a gift to a friend!
