Inspired by... Ms. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children movie

It's again the 10th of the month and time for the "Inspired by" creation! But what is Inspired by? Every month awesome Marsha and I choose a subject to be inspired by. It can be for example an idea (link)a product (link)a person (link) or a book (link). Or anything! Then we make something inspired by that theme or a piece of art and share it with you and each other on the 10th of the month. You can browse the past "Inspired By" posts from here (link).

As you can see both from the post title and the trailer above, this time or subject for the Inspired By was the new(ish) movie "Ms. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children". We had chosen the subject months before, taking into account the launch date in the Netherlands and in Finland so November was the earliest possible month.

First a few words about the movie. There's familiar names in the production team - Tim Burton is the director and costumes are by Colleen Atwood. Both are familiar from our previous movie based Inspired Bys like Alice (link) or Snow White (link). So it wasn't surprising to see similarities in the style of the movie with Alice, for example.

When I went to the theater I didn't quite know what to expect. I hadn't read the book before seeing the movie nor did I know anything about the book or story before viewing. Without no expectations I still was a bit disappointed. Visually the movie is great, but the story just didn't take off like I wished it would. Normally, after a great movie, I get absorbed to that world so that when leaving the theater I feel that I would be in the movie. This movie didn't do it. Maybe if I would have read the book, the story would have been better? Though I've heard that the movie goes its own direction when the story line is concerned.

To really shorten the story the movie is about Jacob, Ms. Peregrine and her "peculiars". Jacob has a grandfather that has been telling him fabulous stories his whole life. One day grandfather gets killed and that starts an avalanche of things which leads Jacob to discover that all the stories his grandfather told are actually real. There's evil beings hunting the peculiars and Jacob can help to protect them.

More info about the film here in Wikipedia (link) and in IMDB here (link). If you want to read about the book, then head for example here in Wikipedia (link)

Like I said, the visual side of the movie was good. Maybe it was just the busy time I went to see the film, but even that didn't rise to the level I was expecting. But that being said, I still had a very clear vision of what to do when I left the cinema.

Eyes play a big part in the movie so my original idea was to have an eye as my center piece. I pondered for a while if that was too peculiar, but then decided to follow my instinct and original spark of inspiration and just go with it.

What also was a major source of inspiration was a short scene where Jacob explores the house where the Ms. Peregrine's home was decades ago. There's plenty of visual inspiration in that one! Odd items, scattered objects, cob webs and dust. What really got my imagination going was the dust.

The third inspiration behind my piece is actually kind of two things. It's the color scheme. The teal / dark blue has it's source in the movie, but it's also what I think of being "Burton color". It changes a little in every movie, but that inky, beautiful blue is something that belongs to a Burton film in my book. In the movie in question the color is visible for example in the dress of the name character, Ms. Peregrine.

Above and below you can see my piece using the three things mentioned before - there's the colors, the eye and the dust. My goal was to create something like a highly decorative door bell or a knocker. I also wanted the piece to be a collection of little pieces, some of them even odd or peculiar. And to coat the whole thing there needed to be cob webs and dust for the ages, forsaken effect.

Thank you for your visit today! Here's the link to Marsha's take on the subject (link)! Can't wait to see what she has created! So off you go too to see what kind of things got her imagination going with this film and what kind of magical piece was brought to daylight!

WOW love it and you can tell it was so inspired by the movie. I have not seen it yet but decided to read the books (i'm doing that now). So far the books are excellent.

The eye is self made, but with Prima stuff ;)

I've heard that the books are really good, but the movie is not like the books in story-wise. I'm thinking of reading the books out loud to my kids :)

I haven't seen the movie, but I read the books a few years ago. Your piece is exactly like something I would imagine you would find in the orphanage!
