Inspired by: 3

It's again the 10th of the month and time for the "Inspired by" creation! But what is Inspired by? Every month awesome Marsha and I choose a subject to be inspired by. It can be a movie (link)an item (link)a designer (link), a painting (link) or a piece of music (link). Then we make something inspired by that theme or a piece of art and share it with you and each other on the 10th of the month.

This month we had a really broad subject. Marsha reminded me that this challenge marks a 3-year birthday to the "Inspired By". I was really amazed as it feels that only yesterday we started. We didn't call the challenge "Inspired By" at first. And it took also its time to get the image for it. But now it's a monthly part of our blogs. We've done really different works and used really different sources of inspiration in it and it's a real treat to be able to continue it. So thank you so much Marsha for doing this on regular basis with me! Without further ado, here's a link to Marsha's post (link) for this source of inspiration!

So what we used for the source this time was the birthday the challenge is having - three. Boy that was hard! The sheer amount of different possibilities left me with too much inspiration and I was really fighting to have some kind of order to my head. First I started a Pinterest board to gather some inspiration or rather to narrow it down. But as I found various different kinds of projects, that didn't help either. I was pondering about doing a triptych, making a mixed media number 3 and including three same things to the project but nothing got the gears in my head really spinning. I even sought help from Wikipedia, thinking that maybe the number is connected to something that would resonate, but nothing.

It wasn't until I uttered my problem to my husband that I got a spark. I was telling him how I found this challenge very difficult as I could do anything. I said that I hoped I could narrow it down somehow, like find a twist in the number itself. Then he said: "Well, why don't you use tree?" And that was it - he provided me the great way out of my state of overflow of inspiration. The next minute I was checking the nearby craft store shelves and bought a cutting board made from tree.

Then I started to have fun. First I added different layers to the board using acrylics. I didn't have a clear image what I was doing still, but I just played with the paints and tried out things that I had found interesting in my Pinterest board. The end result was being a bit busy to my taste so I painted over it with a self-made "glaze". I mixed acrylic paint together with Soft Gloss Gel and got this beautiful night shade, inky blue with a touch of purple.

Somehow the board started to be more of a background needing something on top. So I drew a girl on book paper. After adding the figure to the board I then realized that the words going over her face were too strong and added another layer of paper on top, this time just plain white paper. Then I colored the face using both acrylics and water color pencils. I took some twine and cord and made her a blonde, curly hairdo. And after adding some flowers and embellishments to her hair, I thought that she really needed tiny butterfly wings.

So there she is! A little fairy like creature made on a wooden cutting board having number three in her hair.

There's still one part to the story and it's that she has a new home already. My co-worker always brings me all kinds of treasures he thinks I might use in my projects so I gave this board to him. Or rather, I let him choose if he would want it or not. I was so pleased to hear when he said that he had actually thought about asking me to do something for him but didn't dare! So all is well that ends well - everyone was happy: he getting a piece to bring home, me for finishing a project with all the inspiration possible!

Thank you so much for stopping by today! But now, let's hurry to Marsha's blog to see what she has done this time! I bet it's something amazing!

Happy birthday Inspired By!

Hahahaha! Funny that you had trouble narrowing it down as you were the one to suggest 3! I loooove your board!!! What an awesome surface to work on and the fairy is adorable! I had to search for the little 3 in her hair... It's that finishing touch!
I didn't write it in my post, but Harold had a big part in me pinning it down to the pinball machine (it will make sense when you see my post). So: hurray for supportive and inspiring husbands!!! Thank you Riikka! Love you!
