It's again the 10th of the month and time for the "Inspired by" creation! But what is Inspired by? Every month awesome Marsha and I choose a subject to be inspired by. It can be an idea (link), a word (link), a product (link), a movie (link), a designer (link) or a book (link). Or anything! Then we make something inspired by that theme or a piece of art and share it with you and each other on the 10th of the month. You can browse the past "Inspired By" posts from here (link).
This time the topic dropped on us so to say. I've noticed some news about an excavation of a ship wreck near Finnish coast and followed the news with some interest. But when my Twitter feed showed that the ship had been identified as a Dutch one, I really got interested!
It turned out that the whole story was like from a movie or as it says in the Finnish article, from Donald Duck. The place of the wreck was known for a while and divers were trying to discover what vessel it was. If you look at a map, you can see that the Gulf of Finland, where the ship lays, is quite closed. So naturally the divers thought that the ship was from the surrounding countries like Sweden or Estonia. But as there was no vessel known in those countries to have sunken there in the time period in question the divers seemed to have hit a wall. But then something unbelievable happened - a historian found an old map in the Dutch archives and contacted Estonia. Those researchers there remembered this Finnish diver asking about a sunken ship in the place the map showed and rest is history as they say!
The discovery is quite exciting as it's one of the few Dutch wrecks that has been preserved in a great condition. Near the Dutch coast there's a creature called naval shipworm which eats the wrecks only leaving metal and maybe some cargo untouched but the Gulf doesn't have that creature.

The discovery is exciting in the scientific circles but I was also so excited as it was almost a perfect fit for Inspired By! A connection between the two countries where Marsha and I live! So I was so happy she agreed on the topic.
The news got me excited also because they reminded me of my love for history, archaeology and many things more. Like always, then came the editing part. I was thinking about sunken treasures, about my dream job when I was a kid (conservator-restorer) and how I've always love the sea. The big problem was that I loved many of the ideas but I still didn't want to do like a dozen projects.
Suddenly it hit me - a minialbum! The answer I could do a few projects simultaneously without doing a multiple projects. For the cover I could include the idea of the sunken treasure canvas and inside I could document the ideas and memories the discovery brought up.
So here it is! My mini album, inspired by the Huis the Warmelo discovery. The inside holds many memories and thoughts but the cover is like it would be just brought to the surface from the wreck itself. The texture and look is created by using the Rust Effect pastes from Finnabair's release but I included some Mica, Crackle Paste and Micro Beads in there. I'm quite happy with the look I achieved!
I also treated the inside pages with some rust touches to keep the look coherent. My idea was also to mimic an old letter in the inner page so I chose a brown patterned paper from 7 Dots Studio as my material and wrote using black ink.
One more fun thing connected to this "IB piece" is also the photo shoot I did for it. Me and my family headed for the sea shore on a sunny day and we spent some time there climbing the rocks, watching the ice melt and kids gathering reeds and pieces of ice to make a boat of their own.
It was quite fun to see how well the mini fitted to the colors of the wet rocks. Many of the shots I took are kind of "where's Waldo" styled as you need to look twice to see the mini in the shot.
But enough about my project, let's now head for Marsha's blog and see what she has done! Somehow I have a feeling that it's something very different!

Oh gosh... This is so stunning! You nailed it! I had a hunch that you would go with something like 'sunken treasures' :-). How tiny is the mini? 10 x 10 cm? Smaller? I love that you've found a way to record those memories. I bet you would have never done it if it weren't for IB!!! I also love that you took the mini for a photoshoot!!! I think you had more info than I had about the ship. I guess the Dutch media is waiting for the real excavation! I can't wait to find out more about it though!
What a treasure you have created - it's as if it were a treasure brought up from beneath in the sea - gorgeous.
Ihan todella upea taas! Toivottavasti klemmarikellarissa toteutuisi joku tämän tyylinen kurssi :)
