Valse Triste ATC - Koukussa Kortteihin GDT

Greetings! It's Monday an a new week! Today I'm sharing with you a series of ATCs. These are made as a guest to a Finnish forum for a card challenge there. The forum is called Koukussa Kortteihin which translates "hooked to cards".

I got to choose the challenge theme and as the idea behind it is to try different sizes and styles I went with ATCs and used a piece of music as my inspiration. The composer is Jean Sibelius and the piece is Valse Triste (Sad Waltz). I guess it was part of the then closing Halloween, partly the autumn gloom that spurred the idea. But the waltz itself is really beautiful. You can hear the piece for example here (link)

The story in the music is a sad one as the piece is a part of music composed to a play called Kuolema (Death). This particular waltz on the other hand is one of the best known pieces by Sibelius and it's considered to be one of his signature pieces. I guess almost all the Finns know to pieces by Sibelius, Finlandia and Valse Triste.

But back to the story - there's a boy and a dying mother. When lying on the bed the mother starts to hear a distant music that invites her to dance. She rises in her night gown and dances to the music and in the end of the piece Death is standing on the treshold. So a bit gloomy and daunting.

I used mainly black and white in my own set but brought in touches of blue and purple, too, as I hear the music in those shades. What I also hear in the music, or get a mental image of, is a white butterfly. So one of the cards is that butterfly, out side a cage. Then there's a cello style instrument to represent all those strings in the composition. And the third one is an old photo of friends or family. I colored a dress of one of the women white and added crosses over the others. My great aunt used to do that to old photos. Every time she heard that someone had passed away, she'd go through her photos and add crosses to those who were not among us anymore.

Thank you for stopping by today. I promise to have a lighter post tomorrow!
