Inspired by: Versace Autumn/Winter 1998 Campaign

It's again the 10th of the month and time for the "Inspired by" creation! But what is Inspired by? Every month awesome Marsha and I choose a subject to be inspired by. It can be a movie (link)an item (link)a designer (link), a painting (link) or a music style (link). Then we make something inspired by that theme or a piece of art and share it with you and each other on the 10th of the month.

Versace - Steven Meisel - 1998FW - Versace Advertorial Photoshoot - fashion ads

This time our topic was Versace's Autumn/Winter 1998 campaign. We had decided or agreed something fashion related on this month earlier and then Marsha found these exquisite pictures of this campaign. We both were blown away!

I love the style and the color scheme of the pictures. I love how they remind me of Renaissance art, the grand masters and the chiaroscuro and sfumato. The lighting in the pieces is just perfect! The first piece that popped in my head while looking through the pictures was the painting by Leonardo da Vinci called "Lady with an Ermine"

But what I took as my staring point was the colors and the different materials. I also was inspired by the props - the jewelry. the birds and the weapons. My first idea was to include a dagger style piece to the creation, but then I decided against it when I started creating.

What I created was based on a need. I shipped my current art journal to be photographed for an upcoming article and that left me with no art journal! Oh my how I felt bare! So I needed a new one and decided to buy a bigger one. My only guidelines were that the pages would have to bee thick and sturdy enough and that it would need to be spiral bound. So meet my new art journal! It's big and black and has blue on the cover!

As the cover was already black when I started, there was no need to work on the whole cover. I started by creating some texture with a stencil and gel medium. Then on top I glued pieces of canvas and paper and dry wall tape. I tried to mimic the different textures and feels the pieces of clothing have in the campaign. On top of this background I then gathered different Mechanicals, the metal embellishments, and some chipboard shapes and flowers.

I used similar color scheme than some of the campaign pictures have - blue, aged brown and black. I left the metals showing here and there for the aged look. The title refers to ideas and letting them fly. As the campaign pictures had many birds in them, I guess that lead my thought. Instead of birds I used butterflies in my creation but the feathers I added remind about the crows in the pictures.

But enough about my creation, I'm so eager to see what Marsha has created this time! Here's the link for you and me to go explore! Thank you for stopping by today!
