Bright - background tutorial

Hello and lovely Friday! Today I want to share this background tutorial with you. I made the lace inspired background with gesso, Gelatos and gel medium.

The topic of the page is my older daughter. I love the way her mind works! She can make connections with things so fast and so remarkably that I sometimes am left with my mouth open. She really is bright!

I guess I still had this previous page of her (link) in my mind when I started creating as I again went with pink. It's funny how I make a lot of pink pages about her, but the pages about my other daughter tend to be turquoise. I guess it reflects their choises of colors.

Please, scroll down for the tutorial!

Sivun aiheena on vanhempi tyttäreni.

1. Chose the color scheme for the page and grab your favorite Gelatos crayon. Think where you will put the photo and work your magic around that area.

First take a pencil and doodle loose circles around the place, where you will put your photo. If you are afraid, just close your eyes and free your mind! If you have small children, take a look how freely they draw lines.

Then take your favorite Gelatos and draw a few rounds with that, too. You can mix two colors if you like.

Jos sinulla on pieniä lapsia lähipiirissä, tarkkaile kuinka vapaasti he piirtävät viivoja.

Ota sitten Gelatos-liitusi ja piirrä silläkin muutamia kaaria. Voit sekoittaa useampaa väriä, jos haluat.

2. To make the page more dreamy, let's soften the look a bit. Take your brush and wet it with water. Trace the circles you drew with your Gelatos with your brush and allow the color to smear a bit. You probably need to dip your brush to water a few times depending how much you have drawn.

2. Saadaksesi sivuun enemmän unenomaisen, herkän vaikutelman, levitä Gelatos-jälkeä hieman. Ota sivellin ja kasta se veteen. Pyörittele viivat läpi kostealla siveltimellä ja anna värin levitä ja pehmentyä.

3. Time to add that delicate lace! Using your palette knife, add some gesso through a stencil. Pick a stencil that has delicate, lace like pattern like this crackle stencil. You can also use something like a doily or flower pattern.

Remove the stencil and let the gesso dry or dry with a heat gun. Be careful not to cook the gesso with the heat gun so that it won't bubble!

When the gesso is dry, it creates a wonderful 3-dimensional pattern.

3. Aika lisätä pitsi! Käyttäen palettiveistäsi taikka vanhaa etukorttia, lisää sivuun gessoa sabluunan läpi. Käytä sabluunaa, jossa on kevyt pitsimäinen kuvio.

4. Add a touch of color and glass like effect with Gelatos and gel medium. Create a colored gel medium with your chosen Gelatos using this tutorial by Andrea Gomol as you reference (link). Scrape a few flicks of Gelatos on a palette, add gel medium and mixed it together with your palette knife.

Apply the mix to your page using a palette knife. Add a small amount of the colored medium on top of your 3-D gesso and then scrape it off - the medium will only stay in the cracks of the gesso leaving the surface white and creating a glass work like effect.

Let dry or dry using your heat gun - again, remember not to boil the medium!

Finish your page with layers of patterned paper, embellishments and alphas. I used Gelatos to color a tag to match the color scheme of the page. I also created "gesso confetti" to mimic the paper confetti used in the page - I dibbed the end of a pencil to gesso and then used it like a stamp to create the little dots at the side of the page.

Thank you for looking! Have a great start to the weekend!
