It's Friday and that means a new process video on my channel! This time it's about this art journaling spread.
I had this urge try to add the focal point on the seam of the spread. I wanted especially to cut the paper doll in half to see if such a composition would look good. That cut determined the rest of the layout, then! Let me try to explain. You probably know that people's faces aren't symmetric? Like if you'd mirror the left side of one's face, the end result would be a totally different looking person than with mirroring the right side or then the actual person. I knew all this, but was still astonished how different the two halves of the paper doll looked! So instead of making a continuous composition flowing from one page to the next, I decided to use that difference and heighten it.
I say heighten, but I still didn't do anything too drastic, just chose the small layering elements to either side. I was first going to make a bigger backdrop for her, but instead decided to use just little elements. And on the right side of the page there's flowers blooming while on the left there's black leaves and frosty branches. The idea came from the turn of the year. The left is the gone 2023 and the right the new 2024. From winter to spring.
If you want to see how I made the spread, please see the video above.
I think I want to use this idea of adding the focal point to the center seam again! Explore it a bit more. It's such a powerful composition, in my opinion, such an emphasis on the duality of things.
Thank you for stopping by today! I hope you liked the video! And I'm wishing you a lovely weekend - may it be a crafty one!
