Inspired By ... Stroll Through The Hood

It's again the 10th of the month and time for the "Inspired by" creation! But what is Inspired by? Every month awesome Marsha and I choose a subject to be inspired by. It can be a movie (link)an item (link)a designer (link), a painting (link) or a music style (link). Then we make something inspired by that theme or a piece of art and share it with you and each other on the 10th of the month.

This time the challenge has two source of inspiration - the neighborhood we live and Nathalie Kalbach. Her way of doing "Stroll through the Hood" posts got us inspired to try the same. So we went strolling through the hood, taking pictures and trying to think what is the thing that we like about the place we live.

I live in a neighborhood that is close to the city center but as you can see from the photos, there's nature present. I took this in my one point - the combination of the built environment and the nature. Then I thought long about how to present this. A layout would have been great as I could then add loads of journaling, but I didn't have a photo that would capture my idea perfectly. I've lately done art journal spreads to the challenge so I wanted to do something different. So I decided to go with a canvas.

Then I found myself stuck. What I could do to present the combination of nature and technology? And then somehow I started thinking about lightbulbs and circles and remembered a little funny thing I found in our summer cottage as a child. It was a little cross that had a teeny tiny class lens in the centre and under the lens was a teeny tiny photo of a church. From churches my ideas turned to icons and there it was - the guidelines for my project.

Here's my finished piece. I made it to resemble an icon in a way and also to hold that tiny picture in the middle. To give that the lens effect I adhered a circle epoxy sticker on top of the photo. To get the combination of the technology and nature, I constructed different circles going around the canvas. The outer most is like rays of sun but made with light bulbs - with the technology. The next circle is done with natural elements - flowers and leaves. I also added a few "vines" here and there to get the natural feeling and chose to go with green and gold. Green to resemble the greenery around my neighborhood and gold to give the piece more icon like appearance.

I wonder what Marsha has done with this challenge! Here's the link to her post! Lets go and see!
